Women’s Health Clinic
Common Women’s Health Concerns
Period Symptoms and Control
It’s common for women to experience irregular bleeding patterns, or heavier than usual periods, or severe pain with periods. Even though these are common, sometimes there may be causes that require further tests or assessment. There are also many treatment options available, and it would be worth discussing these with a doctor to decide what is suitable for you.
Contraception
There is a wide range of different types of contraception available on the market. The doctors who consult at HealthMint will take the time to discuss your health and lifestyle requirements to determine the most suitable option for you. Some of the doctors who consult at HealthMint can also offer Contraceptive Implant and IUD insertion and removal.
Cervical Screening Test (previously known as Pap Smears/Pap Tests)
The Cervical Screening Test is a 5 yearly test for people aged 25 to 74, and replaced the Pap Test in Australia from December 2017. This new test, still looks and feels the same as a Pap Test, but instead tests for the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) and is expected to protect up to 30% more women! Your first Cervical Screening Test is due two years after your last Pap Test. If the results are normal, then you will only need to have the test every 5 years.
HealthMint recognises that this isn’t something women tend to look forward to, so the doctors that consult at HealthMint aim to make you as comfortable as possible. If this is your first time having a Cervical Screening Test, you can be comforted in knowing that the actual procedure will only take 5 minutes out of the whole consultation, and if you wish a family member or friend can be by your side. The practice has also invested in a special piece of equipment to make your test even faster and more comfortable. The Welch Allyn KleenSpec system provides a light source that attaches to the specula, getting rid of the need for a doctor to shine a wall mounted light at you, and ensuring optimal visibility and efficiency.
Breast Examinations
Women over 40 or who have noticed any change in their breast (such as a new lump or skin changes) are advised to get checked by a professional. Your doctor will first take a thorough history, perform an examination in a sensitive manner and advise you of a diagnosis or arrange further tests or specialist referrals.
Menopause
Menopause occurs on average around age 50. Some women can experience it earlier or later. It can cause a lot of physical symptoms and changes including hot flushes, mood changes, skin changes, irregular bleeding and possibly weight changes. You may also notice a change in your sleeping pattern. If any symptoms are troublesome, it’s worth discussing treatment options. Also, because a woman’s health risks change after menopause, it is a good opportunity to have a thorough health check and discuss preventative health.
