GPs who consult at HealthMint provide skin checks and assess moles, spots and other changes on the skin. Appointments are available at our Cranbourne North and Croydon medical centres.

A skin check is a clinical assessment that considers what your GP can see on the skin alongside your medical history and risk factors. If any areas need monitoring, further investigation or removal, your GP will explain the options and recommended next steps.

What is a skin check and who should consider one?

A skin check is a clinical assessment performed by a GP to examine spots, moles or lesions that may require monitoring or further investigation.

A skin check may be appropriate if you:

  • Have noticed a new or changing mole or skin spot
  • Have a personal or family history of skin cancer
  • Spend significant time outdoors or have had high sun exposure
  • Have fair skin, freckles or many moles
  • Would like a general skin assessment as part of preventive healthcare

Your GP can help determine whether a skin check is suitable for you based on your medical history and individual risk factors.

How often should you have a skin check?

The frequency of skin checks varies depending on your skin type, personal history and level of risk.

Some people may benefit from regular reviews, while others may only require assessment if they notice a new or changing spot. Your GP can provide guidance on an appropriate review schedule based on your circumstances.

What happens during a skin check appointment?

A skin check appointment usually includes the following steps:

  1. Medical history and concerns – Your GP will ask about any skin changes you have noticed and discuss relevant history such as sun exposure or family history.
  2. Skin examination – Your GP examines the area of concern and may check other exposed areas if appropriate.
  3. Closer assessment – Clinical tools may be used to examine certain moles or spots in more detail.
  4. Explanation of findings – Your GP explains what they can see and whether monitoring or further assessment is recommended.
  5. Next steps – If needed, your GP will discuss follow-up, biopsy, mole removal or referral to a specialist.

What is involved in mole removal?

If your GP recommends removing a mole or taking a biopsy, this is usually done to allow further assessment of the tissue.

The procedure is typically performed in a treatment room using local anaesthetic to numb the area. The mole or lesion is removed or sampled, the area is dressed and aftercare advice is provided. If testing is required, results are reviewed with you at a follow-up appointment.
