Stress, Anxiety and Low Mood: What Do These Mean?

Stress, anxiety and depression are often used interchangeably, but they describe different experiences.

Stress is a common response to pressure or change. While short-term stress can be manageable, ongoing stress can affect sleep, concentration, mood and physical health.

Anxiety involves persistent feelings of worry, nervousness or unease that don’t settle, even when there’s no clear cause. These feelings may interfere with daily activities, work, or relationships.

Depression is a mood condition characterised by ongoing low mood, loss of interest or enjoyment, fatigue, and changes in sleep or appetite. Symptoms can vary from person to person and may develop gradually.

A GP can help assess what you’re experiencing and discuss appropriate next steps based on your individual situation.

We believe that having a supportive, relaxing and safe space is so crucial in achieving great outcomes with mental health and coping with life's challenges. The GPs that consult at HealthMint clinics all share our philosophy and love delivering holistic and attentive care with a focus on both the physical and mental components of wellbeing.

How Can a GP Support My Mental Health?

The GPs who consult at HealthMint take a whole-person approach to mental health care. Support may include:

  • Taking time to understand what you’re experiencing and how it’s affecting your life
  • Discussing contributing factors such as stress, sleep, physical health, or life changes
  • Providing education about mental health conditions and management options
  • Developing a Mental Health Care Plan where appropriate
  • Referring you to a psychologist or psychiatrist if further support is needed

Mental health care plans are designed to support structured, ongoing care and may make you eligible for Medicare-rebated psychology sessions, subject to clinical assessment.

For patients who may benefit from additional support, we also work closely with our psychology services.

What Is a Mental Health Care Plan?

A Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) is a structured plan developed by a GP to support people experiencing mental health concerns.

It typically involves:

  • An assessment of your mental wellbeing
  • Discussion of your personal goals and support needs
  • A referral to a mental health professional, such as a psychologist
  • Access to Medicare rebates for eligible sessions

Your GP will review progress over time and adjust the plan if needed. Mental health care plans are not one-size-fits-all — they’re tailored to your circumstances and reviewed regularly.

What Kind of Appointment Should I Book?

If you’re seeking support for mental health concerns, it’s best to book an extended GP appointment. This allows enough time for a thorough discussion and assessment.

When booking, let reception know that you’d like to discuss mental health or a Mental Health Care Plan. Appointments can be made:

  • In person
  • Via telehealth, where appropriate

You can view appointment lengths and fees on our pricing information page.
