Postnatal Care & 6-Week Check

GP & Baby Check-Ups in Cranbourne North & Croydon

The weeks after birth are a time of major physical, emotional, and lifestyle change — for both you and your baby.

At HealthMint, our postnatal care appointments are designed to support your recovery, your wellbeing, and your baby’s early health.

What Is Postnatal Care?

Postnatal care refers to the medical care provided after childbirth, usually during the first six weeks following delivery.

This period is important to:

  • Check your physical recovery after birth
  • Support emotional and mental wellbeing
  • Monitor your baby’s growth and development
  • Provide routine childhood immunisations

The 6-Week Postnatal Check: What to Expect

At HealthMint, the 6-week postnatal check involves an appointment for both you and your baby.

👩 For You (Mother)

Your GP will:

  • Review your physical recovery after pregnancy and birth
  • Check healing after vaginal birth or caesarean section
  • Discuss bleeding, pain, pelvic floor recovery, and energy levels
  • Screen for postnatal mood changes, anxiety, or depression
  • Discuss contraception and future family planning
  • Answer any questions about feeding, sleep, or your health

An internal examination may be offered where clinically appropriate.

👶 For Your Baby

Your GP and nurse will:

  • Perform your baby’s 6-week health check
  • Measure weight, length, and head circumference
  • Examine hips, heart, eyes, and general development
  • Answer questions about feeding, sleep, and settling
  • Administer the 6-week immunisations (with nurse support)

Why the 6-Week Check Is Important

The 6-week postnatal appointment:

  • Helps identify health concerns early
  • Supports both physical and emotional recovery
  • Ensures your baby is growing and developing well
  • Provides reassurance during a big adjustment period

Even if you’re feeling well, this check is an important step in ongoing care.

When to seek urgent medical advice

Contact your GP or seek urgent care if you experience:
• Vaginal bleeding
• Severe or worsening abdominal pain
• Dizziness or fainting
• Fever or signs of infection
• Severe headaches or vision changes

Early assessment helps keep both you and your pregnancy safe.

Managing symptoms and concerns in early pregnancy

Early pregnancy can come with many physical and emotional changes.

Your GP can help with:
• Nausea and vomiting
• Fatigue
• Mild pain or discomfort
• Questions about medications in pregnancy
• Mental wellbeing and emotional support

If anything doesn’t feel right, it’s always appropriate to seek medical advice.

When Should I Book My Postnatal Appointment?

We recommend booking your 6-week postnatal check shortly after your baby is born to ensure availability around the ideal timeframe.

If you have concerns earlier — such as pain, heavy bleeding, low mood, feeding issues, or worries about your baby — you don’t need to wait until six weeks to see your GP.
